How to Speed Up Your WordPress Website: 5 Tips from PSD2HTML Developers

WordPress (WP) is the undisputed leader among content management systems, with a market share of over 52% — head and shoulders above its rivals. This open-source platform has a wealth of themes, plugins, and extensions that can be easily tweaked to suit anyone’s needs and tastes.

While this is clearly one of the greatest WP benefits when put side by side with many similar web builders, a large number of add-ons may also negatively reflect on its performance, making pages slower to load. There are other issues that affect the speed of a WP website, too.

Why is website speed crucial? What prevents a WP website from “flying”? What can you do to get a WP website to run faster? Read on to learn the answers to these survival-critical questions.

WHY BOTHER ABOUT A WP WEBSITE’S SPEED?

A WP website’s speed is no triviality. There are two main reasons why it can create a live-or-die scenario for an online business:

What problems a slow WP site may present

WHAT SLOWS DOWN YOUR WEBSITE?

There are three main factors that determine how fast your WP website can run.

A slow WP website: main causes

5 TIPS ON A WP WEBSITE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

The PSD2HTML developers have implemented thousands of WP projects over nearly a decade and a half of the company’s history. They are experts in optimizing WP websites’ performance and are always happy to share their years-long, all-around expertise with you.

Here are five effective measures they recommend to get your WP website to load faster.

1. JOIN MULTIPLE FILES INTO ONE LARGE DOCUMENT

Join multiple files into one

All of the HTML, CSS, or image files on the server need to be fetched to the user’s browser. For each of these documents, the browser sends a request to the server. The server processes the request and sends back a response.

A large number of requests for individual files means more time before the user actually sees the result on the screen. One of the methods to reduce the flow of requests and thus decrease the loading time is to combine several smaller files into one larger document.

You can do it either by using Gulp or by installing a special plugin called Autoptimize. Gulp is our developers’ weapon of choice. It provides a more fine-grained control over what files to stick together and how.

2. KEEP YOUR DATABASE NEAT

Keep your database neat

The WP database must be free of any clutter that gets amassed inside it over time, such as multiple post revisions. If it’s not, you’re putting your entire website performance at risk.

You can install a number of plugins to address this task, including:

The wp_options table represents a particular source of concern, as it may grow to an unmanageable size over time. Again, you can install and run a plugin to clean this table, such as Advanced Database Cleaner. However, make sure you’ve made a copy of the file first.

Database management is something to be taken very seriously. In most cases, it requires professionals to handle it. This is when the PSD2HTML WP developers can really be useful to you. With their deep expertise in MySQL performance optimization, your website is guaranteed to run really fast.

3. TURN ON PAGE CACHING

Turn on page caching

Page caching is an excellent way to speed up a WP website. Why? Because no request-response process needs to be triggered. The pages are fetched from the server once and then can be accessed locally. As a result, the loading speed soars.

To take advantage of page caching, install any of the following CMS-provided plugins:

Another way to turn on page caching is to add a few lines of code to the .htaccess file. If you choose this technique but don’t want to get technical, our WP gurus will help you with that as well.

4. TURN OFF HOTLINKING

Turn off hotlinking

You have two basic ways to use images on your WP site:

  1. Upload them to your own host and then include them in your posts from its hard drive.
  2. On your website, place a link that points to another resource with the image you need to add to a post

The second practice is called hotlinking. At first glance, it seems like a good solution from the bandwidth-saving perspective. However, when others start scraping images from your site, it increases the load on your server. Guess what will happen to your website speed under these circumstances.

So, turning hotlinking off is wise. If you’re a Cloudflare user, take advantage of their ScrapeShield app. Otherwise, consider adding a few lines of code to the .htaccess file. The PSD2HTML developers will help you with that to ensure no outsiders can steal your precious bandwidth.

5. KEEP WORDPRESS AND TECHNOLOGIES UP TO DATE

Keep WordPress and technologies up to date

Finally, the speed of your WP site may depend on the CMS version. The world of technologies evolves rapidly. What was state-of-the-art yesterday is a Stone Age tool today. The same goes for all the nuts and bolts of WordPress.

Every update includes new features and enhancements that make your WP website faster and more secure. So, verify that you’re using the latest CMS version. Also, regularly monitor the technologies responsible for the website operation, such as PHP. The 7.3. version of this programming language is much more robust, faster, and more secure than its predecessors.

When in doubt, get in touch with PSD2HTML, and we will take these matters under our supervision. Our WP developers, like doctors, never begin fixing an issue without knowing what has caused it. They thoroughly investigate the problem first.

If the investigation shows that PHP scripts slow down a site, our devs review its code in detail to find the weak spots and optimize the scripts. The speed of PHP scripts they strive to achieve falls between 0.35 and 0.85 seconds.

There are no ready-made recipes when it comes to code refactoring. Every website is unique. Still, our developers are experienced in this kind of work and enjoy it, since it gives them a lot of room for creativity.

BOTTOM LINE

The speed of a WordPress website is an important consideration for any online business. It greatly affects the bounce rate and SEO rankings. There are several factors that determine how fast a WordPress site can load, including the hosting type, number and quality of the CMS components, and the end user’s device hardware and software specifications.

While website owners can tackle some of the issues on their own by installing and running appropriate plugins, many tasks need professional assistance. The PSD2HTML WP division has a long history of successfully completed projects. Our developers can fine-tune your WordPress website to make it fully functional, secure, and fast. WordPress can be extremely fast with the right developers, you got that right; even though I’ve seen many websites ranking #1 with Terrible scores in GTmetrix or HTML Validation, I still try & optimize, then optimize again 🙂
