Promote Your Design Business Online for Free

The internet presents so many great opportunities for designers to promote their businesses on the cheap.  Gone are the days where you have to spend all of your money on ads and promotional materials in order to bring in new clients.  Using a few simple tools, you can promote your design business online without blowing through your budget.

Start a blog

You don’t need a degree in journalism or a background in writing to start a blog.  It’s a great way to organize your projects, tell people what’s new with your business, and show people what you can do.  There are countless platforms you can use for blogging, many of which are completely free.  You control what your site looks like, what is posted on it, and how often you’d like to update it.  A blog can bring in a lot of search engine traffic that might not otherwise have found a traditional portfolio or business site.

Use social media

Use social media to promote your design business

Social media seems to be taking over the world right now, and for good reason.  The possibilities are endless in terms of how many people you can reach and how much content you can share.  Of course, most sites are free to use and come with a huge built-in audience.

Online interviews

This tactic is similar to traditional public relations practices, but it’s even easier and just as free.  There are countless blogs, zines, and online publications that regularly post interviews with designers.  Choose some sites you like and send a quick email explaining why you should be interviewed for their site, and you might just find yourself on the front page of a site that could drive a whole lot of traffic your way.

Directories

If someone is looking for a graphic designer for a project, there’s a good possibility they might head over to an online directory of designers to browse.  Many of these are free to sign up for, so why not?  Just add your name, link, and maybe a short description, and you could have clients finding you in no time.

The internet has changed pretty much everything about the way businesses run.  Most of these promotion methods are incredibly easy and not very time consuming, so give them a try.  You have nothing to lose.  And let us know how these ideas work out for you.
